The NYC Film Festival at Lincoln Center returns for its 56th year.

56th New York Film Festival

One of the most highly-anticipated events of the year, the 56th New York Film Festival (NYFF56) is set to commence on September 28, 2018. Running through October 14, the mission of this world-renowned festival is to bring the best in film from across the globe to Lincoln Center. This year, the Main Slate consists of 30 films from 22 different countries, including entries from famous auteurs making their illustrious returns to new directors showcasing their own mastery of the art.

The main venue for the NYFF56 is Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, where each film will have its inaugural screening. Yet throughout the festival, all Main Slate titles will be given future screenings at a variety of Lincoln Center venues. Consult the official NYFF56 calendar for dates and times.

Even though many of these films will be sure-fire Oscar contenders, the biggest events of the New York Film Festival 2018 are the Opening Night, Centerpiece, and Closing Night selections:

Opening Night – The Favourite
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the film is a darkly comedic reimagining of England’s 18th-century royalty and features heralded performances by Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone.

Centerpiece – ROMA
Having already debuted in Toronto, this autobiographically inspired film tells the everyday, yet thoroughly epic, story of director Alfonso Cuarón’s beginnings in Mexico City circa the early 1970s.

Closing Night – At Eternity’s Gate
This North American premiere from Brooklyn-born filmmaker Julian Schnabel showcases a tour de force performance by Willem Dafoe as the notorious painter Vincent van Gogh during the last days of his life.
